Fire Ants

Fire Ants have been amazingly effective at spreading across the southeast.  Another thing that they are effective at is defending their colonies. You have probably experienced the painful bites and stings they inflict if you, or someone you know, have ever disturbed one of their mounds or foraging trails. 

Fire Ants use a chemical communication system based on pheromones to completely cover their unsuspecting victim and then attack all at one time.  This is why attacks usually involve multiple stings.  Reactions to fire ant attacks range from small, red, itching bumps to severe blisters in people who are allergic to their venom.  In extreme cases, their attacks can even lead to death.
