Atlanta Has Termites
In Georgia, studies show that there are 8-12 colonies of subterranean termites per acre. It is absolutely necessary to keep your home protected from this unwanted threat.
The species that we most commonly deal with here is the Eastern Subterranean Termite. This termite feeds on cellulose, which is contained in wood and any product derived from wood: lumber, wood pallets, cardboard boxes, paper products, cellulose debris, etc.

Eastern Subterranean termite colonies can range in size from 20,000 up to 5 million members. The colonies’ members are divided into three different castes (types of termites), each with different responsibilities. Worker termites are responsible for colony construction and gathering of food. They are the termites that actually cause the damage.

Soldier termites are responsible for defending the colony. The king and queen are responsible for marinating and growing colony population numbers. The queen is constantly laying eggs for her entire life span – which can be up to 20 years.
Signs of a termite infestation include pencil-sized mud tunnels built on foundation walls, sheetrock, or other areas and damaged wood. Damage can range anywhere from pin-hole sized to major structural damage to studs, joists, and sill plates. Another sign of a termite infestation is the appearance of winged termites in late March and April.
These “swarmers” are potential Kings and Queens looking to mate and form new colonies. They typically emerge in kitchen and bath areas in slab homes – but could appear anywhere. They are harmless themselves but are a sign that a mature termite colony is in or near the structure. The presence of one or more of these signs indicates a termite infestation and immediate action should be taken to avoid further damage.
